Excess gum at the extraction site (tooth extraction) is often the result of wound healing. This happens especially when the procedure was difficult and the wound required stitching. Redness and pain most often occur as a result of gum irritation (e.g. during eating or checking with the tongue). Excess tissue should disappear on its own over time (provided it is not irritated). Otherwise, a dental or surgical consultation may be indicated.
